Hiked Bernardo Mountain this Sunday (6/22). This was probably one of the hottest days on the trail for me. I believe the temperature went past 100F at some point during the day.
Bernardo Mountain is located just north of Lake Hodges , in the Rancho Bernardo/ Escondido areas of North County San Diego. Getting to the trailhead is quite easy and not much of a drive. Exit Via Rancho Pkwy (the same exit as the westfield mall) from the I-15N and head east (turn R at the signal), turn R again at the next signal (Sunset Blvd), drive all the way to the end of the road and park in the trailhead parking lot.
The trailhead starts as sidewalk/ pavement going south, parallel to the 15. Shortly the trail turns R and goes under the fwy, emerges and goes N. The trail then continues along the border of the lake. At about 1.5mi from the trailhead, you come to a shady area with a small creek ("felicita creek"). Shortly past this point, look for a "fork in the road" and take the one that climbs upward (the other one just continues along the lake). Follow the trail all the way to the top. You will come accross two other forks in the road, stay left on both of those and keep climbing. At about 3.2mi you come across a water tank (pic below), you summit shortly after that.
